Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)

Artane (Trihexyphenidyl) is an antispasmodic drug that is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Artan has antispasmodic properties, has an inhibitory effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, and relaxes smooth muscles. Artan is particularly suitable for reducing depression and reduced mental health syndrome. Unlike atropine, Artan does not contribute to the development of glaucoma, which is why it is especially effective for the treatment of atherosclerotic parkinsonism.

Indication for use

Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)  can be taken by almost all adults and teenagers over 18 who have Parkinsonism of various etiologies (caused by various reasons) and other diseases of the extrapyramidal system, accompanied by increased muscle tone and hyperkinesis (forced automatic movements due to involuntary muscle contraction).

Precautions

Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)  is not recommended to use if you have:

• Glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure),

• ibrillation (chaotic contractions) of the atria of the heart,

• diseases of the liver and kidneys, 

• hypertension (persistent increase in blood pressure), 

• severe atherosclerosis,

• pregnancy and in period of lactation.

Dose and usage

Artane (Trihexyphenidyl) can be of various doses: 1mg, 2mg and 5 mg – white, round with line in the middle tablets.

The tablets should be taken orally during or after a meal. The daily dosage at the beginning of treatment is from 1 to 2 mg 2-3 times a day and gradually increases by 1 mg to 4-10 mg, 3-4 times a day.

For patients who additionally take other drugs, with an increase in the dosage of Artan, the dose of other drugs decreases. The maximum amount of medicine with a single use is 1 mg, the highest daily dose is 20 mg.

Side effects

Patients who take Artane should be warned about the possible side effects of the drug: dry mouth,  visual perception, pulse quickens, severe headaches and dizziness appear.

If you experience the first unwanted symptoms, you must consult a doctor who will reduce the dosage or stop treatment.
