Catapres (Clonidine)

Catapres (Clonidine) is an efficacious antihypertensive medication.
The mechanism of action of the drug is to reduce central sympathetic tone and
inhibit transmission in postganglionic sympathetic neurons. Catapres (Clonidine) causes a decrease in blood
pressure even in small doses. By the action of this medication the blood
pressure in the organisms lowers due to decreasing of some chemicals amounts in
blood. As a result – blood vessels relax and heart beats more easily and slowly.
In addition, Catapres diminish cardiac output and the vessels of skeletal
muscles and kidneys become less resistance.  

Indication for use

Catapres (Clonidine) can be taken by
almost all adults and teenagers over 18 who have :

·       Gyrintonic creep;

·      
arterial hypertension;

·      
 primary
open-angle glaucoma as monotherapy or and in combination with other medication
that reduce intraocular pressure (eye drops);

·       growth hormone
deficiency.

Precautions

Catapres
(Clonidine) is not recommended to
use if you have: hypersensitivity to some of this medication components; heart
disease or severe coronary artery disease; heart rhythm disorder; low blood
pressure; a history of heart attack or stroke; kidney disease.

In case of pregnancy or breast-feeding you have to
consult with your doctor.

Dose and usage

Dose of Catapres (Clonidine): 0,15mg – white,
round, flat tablets with line in the middle.

Before taking this medication consult with your attending physician.

Catapres is usually prescribed orally starting with 0.075 mg 3-4 times a
day. Depending on the therapeutic effect and tolerability of the medication,
its dose is gradually increased to 0.15 mg 3 times a day or slightly reduced.

In severe cases, 0.3 mg is prescribed 3 times a day. In cases of
resistant forms of hypertension, the dose is increased to 8-10 tablets per day.
High doses of the drug are used in inpatient settings.

Side effects

Some side effects can be noticed after the starting of treatment: dry mouth
(especially in the early days of treatment), constipation, feeling tired,
diarrhea. During treatment, alcohol is prohibited.
